The Platform - The Only constant is change.

  • Student Discipline: There is an overwhelming abundance of student discipline issues in all district schools. Current approaches to promoting improvements have not garnered desired results.
  • Student Achievement: Three years after the pandemic, student achievement scores are still lower than those of comparable districts, despite implementing programs to catch students up.
  • Funding Concerns: Federal and State funding will be cut next school year. In the 2023-2024 school year, FCPS received almost $17m in state funding, including $422,456 for Prevention, Intervention, and Remediation, $111,635 for Remedial Summer School, $480,820 for ESOL, and $546,376 for Special Education. *(VOE Superintendent's Annual Report)

The only constant is change. FCPS is stagnant. The current School Board has continued to rubber-stamp proposals from Central Office with little to no public debate, resulting in routine 6-0 votes, but minimal forward movement. Discipline issues, low test scores, and reduced funding continue to plague FCPS. Applying the same solutions to ongoing problems will not garner improved results. FCPS needs innovative ideas, and school board members willing to ask questions, in a public forum, not the established, corporate, buzzword solutions that aren't working.

When my husband and I moved to Fredericksburg in 2004, we chose to live in the city because of the small school district, the walkability, and the small-town atmosphere. The school district's Title 1 designation was a bonus because it benefits all students. Smaller class sizes, increased remediation, access to food, and decisions made to create a more equitable learning environment appealed to us. However, over the last 20 years, city schools have deteriorated in several categories. Bullying is on the rise, test scores continue a downward trend, and necessary funding continues to evade. Since 2006, FCPS has built three new schools, yet student achievement has declined. School districts are more than the buildings they occupy. These buildings need to be filled with teachers and administrators who are supported and funded, and students who are eager and ready to learn.

Successful schools lead to thriving communities. It's time to embrace change and create success.

About Sarah Stelmok

20+ Year Fredericksburg City Resident

Since moving to Fredericksburg in 2004, Sarah and her family have enjoyed all that our itty-bitty city has to offer. Having lived in all four wards, she has a unique perspective on city life and culture.

STELMOKs IN FCPS

Sarah and her husband's two children have attended and are currently enrolled in Fredericksburg City Public Schools since 2015. Her son has been diagnosed with Autism Level 1 since 2013. Her son has participated in the Gifted and Talented Program since 2nd grade, and has enjoyed advanced academics and art courses. Their daughter was diagnosed with Autism Level 2 in 2022, at the age of 10. Their daughter participates in the general education classroom with her non-Autistic peers. Her children's autism diagnoses require Sarah to actively participate in semi-annual and annual IEP (Individualized Education Plan), 504, and BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan) meetings with teachers and school administrators.

Volunteering With FCPS

Sarah served as the Hugh Mercer PTA Secretary for the 2018-2019 school year before being asked to lead the Lafayette Upper Elementary PTA. Sarah was President of the Lafayette PTA during the transition from a 3-5 school to a K-5 school. Serving during the pandemic allowed Sarah access to teachers, their struggles with virtual learning, and the difficulty of reintroducing students into the traditional learning environment. Her PTA Presidency ended up lasting 3 years. During that time, Sarah introduced Read-a-Thon to Lafayette Elementary. The student body embraced this new fundraiser, allowing students who cannot get donations to be recognized for voluntarily reading.

Small Business Owner

Sarah has owned and operated Nest Realty Fredericksburg and its affiliated real estate businesses since 2013. Nest Realty Fredericksburg has enjoyed multiple Best of the Burg wins, as well as being voted Best Real Estate by readers of Fred Parent and Family Magazine. Nest Realty Fredericksburg's official philanthropy is area schools. Sarah has donated over $100k in teacher and student supplies to FCPS since 2013. She has also donated more than 4000 books to FCPS teachers, classrooms, and students.

During my time as a teacher with Fredericksburg City Public Schools, I experienced firsthand Sarah Stelmok’s thoughtful and consistent support of educators. Although I was not her children's teacher, she generously purchased items from my classroom wish list, demonstrating a sincere commitment to supporting all teachers and students—not just those directly connected to her family.  Through her business, Nest Realty, Sarah has made educator recognition a priority—most notably during Teacher Appreciation Week, when she honored nominated teachers with cash awards to show gratitude for their hard work. During her active involvement in the PTA, she also helped coordinate staff breakfasts and lunches, provided gift cards and care packages, and contributed school supplies—consistently going above and beyond to support the school community.  What has always stood out to me about Sarah is her unwavering presence and engagement within the Fredericksburg City Schools community. Whether it was a special event or an ordinary school day, she showed up—volunteering her time, lending a hand, or simply being available to support students, staff, and families. Her commitment to education is not performative or occasional; it’s a genuine and ongoing dedication. Sarah understands the needs of Fredericksburg’s schools at a ground level and brings both heart and practical experience to the table—qualities that will make her an outstanding advocate on the School Board.

During the past 3-4 years, I’ve had the pleasure of becoming very friendly with Sarah Stelmok. I can honestly say that not only is she a genuinely great human being, but also a tender-hearted woman with an extremely soft spot for all things “education-based.” Her affinity for the city’s teaching staff, administrators, students, and school employees resonates with resounding candor and appreciation. Her candidacy is more than warranted, as her skill set would be an astounding asset to the city in terms of pushing the education system forward in a fruitful direction.
